Winter Road Trip to Bryce Canyon: Perfect Adventure for Families and Friends

OVERVIEW

If you're looking for a magical winter getaway, a road trip to Bryce Canyon National Park is an excellent choice. Known for its stunning hoodoos and breathtaking landscapes, Bryce Canyon transforms into a winter wonderland when the snow blankets the red rocks.

This unique environment offers families and friends an array of outdoor activities, from hiking to cross-country skiing, making it a perfect winter escape. Bundle up, pack the car, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!

GETTING THERE

The journey from Salt Lake City to Bryce Canyon is approximately 270 miles and takes around 4 to 5 hours by car. Start your trip by heading south on Interstate 15, enjoying the scenic views of Utah's mountainous terrain. After about 45 miles, merge onto US-89 South, which leads you through charming towns and beautiful landscapes. Finally, take the UT-12 East exit toward Bryce Canyon, and you'll arrive at the park entrance, ready to explore its winter beauty.

WHERE TO STAY

One of my reasons for visiting Bryce Canyon in the winter is the hotels are cheaper. I have found some fantastic deals at Ruby’s Inn during the off-season. Two nights are plenty to explore the area for a quick weekend getaway.

Best Western Plus Ruby's Inn

During our family’s December road trip to Bryce Canyon, we had the pleasure of staying at Ruby’s Inn. The hotel has an indoor pool and hot tub. Nothing feels better than enjoying a family swim and relaxing in the hot tub after a long day of adventuring. Make sure to stop by the gift shop filled with essential items and cozy hoodies.

Best Western Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel

Another excellent option is the Best Western Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel, which provides a comfortable stay with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. This hotel offers a delicious complimentary breakfast and its proximity to the park makes it easy for families to hit the trails early in the morning and enjoy the winter scenery before the crowds arrive.

WHAT WE DID

Country Skiing or Snow Shoeing

If you're looking to try something different, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing is a fantastic way to explore the park during the winter months. Rentals are available at Ruby Inn’s Winter Activity Center. The staff there can provide tips and guidance for a fun family outing on the snow.

Rim Loop Trail

We chose to ski the 2-mile Rim Loop trail. The trail starts at the parking lot of the Winter Adventure Center and takes you through a Ponderosa forest to a majestic viewpoint of Bryce Canyon. There were some small hills but nothing significant.

Ice Skating

Nothing says winter like ice skating. Visit the Ice Ribbon Skating Rink for a family fun outdoor activity. Located across from Ruby's Inn at the Winter Activity Center.

Hikes

Winter hiking in Bryce Canyon is a unique experience, as the snow adds a magical touch to the park's iconic hoodoos.

Ice Cleats

Some of the trails may be icy so I recommend bringing ice cleats. They are easy to put on and help you navigate an icy trail. Adult and children sizes are available to purchase.

Ice Cleats

Here are four family-friendly hikes to consider:

Queen’s Navajo LoopTrail: My absolute favorite trail and the most popular trail in Bryce! The 3-mile loop descends into the canyon and leads to a section filled with unique rock formations including the Queen’s Garden itself. The best views are seen hiking the trail clockwise.

Navajo Loop Trail: For an easier hike the Navajo Loop Trail is a great option. It is a moderately challenging option that descends into the canyon. The snow-covered trail offers spectacular views of Thor's Hammer and the unique rock formations that make Bryce Canyon famous.

Sunset Point to Sunrise Point: We walked along this trail early in the morning to watch the sunrise. It was freezing! But one of the most enchanting experiences I’ve had in Bryce Canyon.

Mossy Cave Trail: Winter is a great time to visit this popular trail due to the smaller crowds. This short easy hike (0.8 miles round trip) leads to a beautiful cave and a small waterfall. The trail is well-maintained and provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making it perfect for families with young children.

WHERE TO EAT

Restaurants

Many food establishments are closed during the winter season. When we visited Bryce Canyon in December the only restaurant open was Ruby’s Inn Cowboys Buffet & Steak Room, a fantastic restaurant but a bit pricey for our family budget.

When we visited in February the nearest town of Tropic had a couple of restaurants open with more affordable options. We really enjoyed our meal at The Pizza Place. There is a Subway outside the park but expect to pay higher than normal prices.

Before you hit the road, check what places are open and plan your meals accordingly.

Prepared Meals

To save money, I suggest preparing meals at home that can easily heat up in the hotel room’s microwave. Dishes like pasta and a hearty chili are enjoyable after a day outside. Consider packing lunches for your days exploring. Simple sandwiches, salads, or wraps can be prepped in advance. The town of Tropic is nearby and has a small grocery store.

Winter Among the Hoodoos

A winter road trip to Bryce Canyon National Park is a fantastic way to experience the beauty of this unique landscape. With breathtaking scenery, cozy accommodations, and a variety of outdoor activities, this adventure promises to be a memorable family getaway.

So gather your loved ones, pack your winter gear, and embark on this enchanting journey to Bryce Canyon this winter!
