Hiking Horsetail Falls | Alpine Utah

Horsetail Falls

Why I Love It

Reaching Horsetail Falls in Alpine, Utah, is an adventure in itself. Nestled in the stunning alpine landscape, the trail offers a picturesque journey to one of the area's hidden gems. The hike is steep! But suitable for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture the stunning scenery and the mesmerizing beauty of Horsetail Falls!

Need To Know

  • Length: 5 miles out & back

  • Elevation Gain: 1,600 feet

  • Seasons: Open Year Round *if hiking during the winter check the avalanche forecast. The trail travels through potential avalanche terrain.

  • Parking: Parking at the trailhead is limited and roadside parking is prohibited. Start early or visit the trail on weekdays to avoid crowds.

  • Family Friendly Trail: I have seen many young families and moms carrying little ones in a pack.

Tips

  • The trail is rocky with a few stream crossings.

  • At 2 miles there is a junction to the left with a beautiful view of the canyon. I highly recommend taking the small detour. The view is incredible and a perfect spot to take pictures.

Unmarked Trail: At 2.4 miles you come to a junction with a wooden sign. Most people continue up the trail. But to the left of the sign is an unmarked trail taking you to the base of the falls. The start of the trail is steep but a rope has been attached to trees to aid you in the descent. Follow the trail making your way to the base of the falls.

  • Sledding Down the Trail: For a truly epic adventure during the winter months, ride a sled from top to bottom starting at the junction and ending near the bottom of the trail. It’s terrifying at first. But once you figure out how to steer the sled a child-like enthusiasm takes over. Be sure to wear warm winter gloves and snow pants.

I have hiked Horsetail Falls every season of the year. The winter may be my favorite time of the year to visit the tail. Fewer people and the white frozen landscape appears magical during cold winter months.

Grab a friend and a family member and explore Utah’s diverse terrain. Take Care!
