Spanning approximately 3 miles round trip, this well-loved trail offers a well-maintained path that is suitable for families with older children or those looking for a bit of a workout without being overly strenuous.

GETTING THERE
On Google Maps search Horse Flat Trail for driving directions. The Primrose Overlook trailhead is located at the Summit Trailhead along the Alpine Loop Scenic Drive. The Alpine Loop Scenic Drive is a 20-mile narrow, windy road connecting American Fork and Provo Canyon.
A small parking lot is available, if the lot is full park alongside the road.
Trailhead can be accessed either behind or directly across from a pit toilet located in the parking lot. If starting behind the pit toilet, take a right at the Lame Horse trail sign and follow the trail along the fence. When you come to the Horse Flat trail sign you will know you’re on the correct path.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Primrose Overlook becomes accessible once the Alpine Loop opens, typically at the end of May to the end of October, depending on weather conditions. My favorite time to visit the trail is at the beginning of October when the fall colors are at their best.
At the beginning of the trail, you ascend through a grove of aspens. Just under a mile, you reach an open field with breathtaking views. A great spot for taking pictures!
Upon reaching 1.25 miles the trail climbs 350 feet, the most difficult part of the trail. Take as many breaks as you need. It’s steep! Once you crest the hill, you are rewarded with a stunning view of the backside of Timpanogos and the canyon’s display of vibrant colors and diverse scenery.
The Primrose Overlook trail is a must-visit for anyone seeking the perfect natural beauty and adventure blend. With its stunning views and vibrant grove of aspens, this hike offers a wonderful experience and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
